Just when winter has wickedly saved her grand finale of deep snow and ice for late February, the grocery store disarms us with daffodils, tulips, pussy willow branches. Do we succumb to the false flag of a spring that is somewhere, but not here. Or do we resist, waiting for the warmth of sun, melted snow and real buds on the forsythia bushes.
The answer: We buy not one bunch of daffodils, but two. Carry them home to place in a sunny window, where the pale petals are translucent, the green stems sturdy and we have proof that spring is always somewhere.
